Warding Off Spirits

Just eight years ago I was a filmmaker directing a paranormal documentary about haunted places. There was a point, when I started editing the video, that I believed I had seen it all and had heard it all, and to a certain extent it was true. I’m not talking about things that go bump in the night, nor lights coming on and off by themselves – those I was well used to by then. As I watched the footage I realized I had quietly become resigned to a certain meanness of spirit I had encountered while researching and shooting the film. As a matter of fact I felt far more threatened by the living and their desire for power than by wandering souls trying to grab my attention through their antics. The latter could certainly drain my camera batteries in seconds and yank off my bed cover, and I can honestly say I was fine with that. But the former, those using negative intentions to gain control over others, filled me with dread and sadness.

The world I had stepped in to investigate was clearly dominated by those who routinely and professionally inflict pain on others, whether for money or for revenge or simply because they can.

I had capable mentors and wonderful teachers, and upon their advice I had taken to wear all sorts of amulets and recite very specific intentions and prayers to ward off attacks from these dark practitioners and those who seek their services – whom, as far as I could tell, might be anyone anywhere! On top of a litany of prayers I would use clearing sprays, have certain rocks, burn sage, imagine myself in a white bubble of white light, etc. You can imagine how frantic I might get if I didn’t have my protection rock on me! I thought I had a very good reason –actually, a few very good reasons- to be convinced that I needed protection. I believed myself to be the recipient of negative attacks more than once and knew first hand that it was better to prevent them than to deal with them.

The energy that is employed in these attacks, as I learned through my research, more often than not involves the binding of a spirit to do the will of the practitioner.

According to their teachings these spirits are mostly of human origin –they term them ‘lost souls”-, but can also be non-human, such as Nature spirits (elementals), and pagan deities. So, although the attack was actually inflicted by a spirit, the practitioner was the one to fear. The endless display of phenomena my team and I encountered during the shoot did give me some pause and I had to consider the possibility that there was something to this.

The irony was nor lost on me, having interviewed so many different practitioners of light and dark craft, that each practitioner wore a bigger amulet than the last person, warding off each other’s hell-bent will to cause harm or protect from harm in this escalating paranormal war of sorts. Yet not a single one of them was content or pleased with their ability to command spirits to do their bidding. Actually, most of them seemed ill at ease with their career choice, and perhaps not as healthy or abundant as they wished to be? As time went by, and post-production continued (documentaries are famously long projects to complete) I slowly peeled away most protection items I had acquired over the course of that period. By then I had developed a deeper sense and understanding on how this world worked and how intentions affect those on the receiving end – even the environment is impacted-, and I no longer feared that intrusion in my life; yet I remained convinced that darkness was a dense and tangible thing and needed to be warded off somehow. Eventually even the last pendant came off, at Dr. Eric Pearl’s recommendation during my Reconnective Healing® training, and with it my need for protection vanished.

I had finally realized that to believe one needs protection is often an invitation to have negative intentions become manifest. In other words, to name it is to invite it, so to speak.

Let me expand on this. Spirits are made of energy, just like all of us. Opposites may attract in our human relationships but not so when it comes to energy. If you are happy, you’ll emit a high vibrational frequency, and “happy” spirits/energy will be attracted to you. If you are angry your vibration will slow down, and attract similar spirits/energy, often leading to more anger and even aggression. Fearing something is a sure way to attract it into your life. Even if you find yourself not believing in spirits it cannot be denied that energy is real, and it is not good or bad, it just is. How we entangle with it, how we view it, how we shape it will determine how it behaves. One thing seems certain, it will magnify and often accrue more of the same. The power of intention is well documented and researched by Lynne McTaggart in her book The Intention Experiment.

Not surprisingly her research shows that negative intention at a distance is the most powerful manifestation of energy manipulation, and the one with the most severe consequences for those involved.

As I had already discovered, practitioners of negative intentions suffered from constant ill health, their bodies and minds do not heal as well since they tend to vibrate at lower frequencies all the time, which often affects the health of those around them as well. It’s not unlike sitting all day next to an electrical source emitting high levels of EMF (electromagnetic radiation). In popular parlance and folk wisdom, they also typically become the victims of the very same spirits they sought to control – some may call it dementia due to lifestyle choices, others may see it as payback.

I think it’s safe to say that you don’t have to be a practitioner of negative intentions to attract negativity into your life. We may find ourselves hating something or someone, clamoring for revenge, wishing ill on others, sometimes for the smallest of incidents. The longer we remain in a state of anger and hate the more likely we are to attract more of it. I know quite a few people whose phones and computers start to malfunction when they are feeling vindictive, and others who come down with a migraine or even a cold as soon as they “shake with anger.”

If there’s a moral to the story, or at least something to take with you, is that if you wear a pendant (religious or not), do it for love, not fear; and if you carry a crystal do so because its beauty brings joy and not the promise of protection. You may believe that the showing of an amulet will keep you safe from external forces when in truth there is only one spirit you might want to keep an eye on – your own. There’s no amulet in the world that can ward you off from yourself.
